State and art galleries in the High Castle: High Castle Füssen - Villa Ludwig Suite Hotel

State and art galleries in the High Castle

High Castle Füssen

Majestically, the High Castle towers over Füssen's old town. It is one of the most significant late Gothic castle complexes in Germany, featuring a picturesque courtyard and unique trompe-l'œil paintings on the façades. In the former summer residence of the Augsburg prince-bishops, you will find the branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections and the Municipal Art Gallery. The interiors themselves are also impressive, such as the Knights' Hall with its richly carved late Gothic coffered ceiling. Experience the beautiful view from the tower over Füssen's old town and far out onto Lake Forggensee.

Benedictine Monastery St. Mang in Füssen

The baroque complex of the former Benedictine Monastery St. Mang rises magnificently on the high bank of the Lech. The history of the monastery dates back to the 8th century when the city's patron, Magnus, founded a monk's cell at this site as a missionary. The architect Johann Jakob Herkomer finally gave the irregularly grown monastery complex a cohesive appearance. Today, the former monastery houses the Museum of the City of Füssen, the city administration, and the parish church of St. Mang.

Pilgrimage Church St. Coloman near Schwangau

Northeast of Schwangau, next to the road to Hohenschwangau, stands the church of St. Coloman in the shadow of some old trees in an open field. The Schwangau mountains with the famous Bavarian royal castles provide a magnificent backdrop. St. Coloman is especially revered as a patron saint against diseases of humans and livestock. It is unknown as to when the first small Coloman's chapel was built near Schwangau. However, the pilgrimage there must have had a widespread reputation early on.

Wieskirche - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Wieskirche is one of the most famous Rococo churches in the world. Approximately 1 million visitors from all over the world come annually, including many pilgrims. The Wieskirche invites you to look, marvel, pray, attend services, and listen to one of the concerts in the summer. It is a place of quiet reflection, to encounter God in the Scourged Saviour.

Oberammergau

Oberammergau is located in the Ammer valley by the Ammer river. Oberammergau is best known for the Passion Play held every ten years, as well as the local artisans ("Herrgottsschnitzer") and its buildings decorated with Lüftlmalerei. Notable examples of this baroque painting technique include the façades of the Forsthaus, the Mußldomahaus, and the Pilatushaus.
